January 14th, 2010
Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee is coordinating a Houston-based Haiti relief effort called “Texans helping Haitians” with the city’s Haitian community in the aftermath of the 7.0 earthquake that hit Haiti Tuesday. Groups included in the effort to provide supplies and medical assistance to Haiti are: the Haitian Multicultural Association, Haitian Caribbean Organization of Texas, Caribbean Impact Foundation, and Haiti Counts.
“The 7.0 earthquake in Haiti is an unimaginable disaster and requires a 50-state relief effort,” said the Congresswoman. “The need is overwhelming and this is the worst natural disaster to hit Haiti in 200 years,” Jackson Lee said. “I am meeting with the Houston Haitian community, churches, and the medical community this weekend to develop relief plans.” The goal of Texans helping Haitians is to provide aid to 100,000 families who are victims of the earthquake.
